Who Started What Online

Hey there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed or join our Monster Emails for updates. You can also follow me on Twitter.

I was reading an article about Microsoft making an offer to Yahoo! and then Murdoch of News Corp getting in the picture and also making an offer subsequently leaving the guys at the stock exchange sitting nervously at the edge of their seats.  Quite interesting – since we’re looking at no less than $40 billion dollars.

Anyway, it got me thinking – all these institutions are like household names but WHO started it.  So I decided for my own peace of mind to come up with a list and I call it Who Started What Online.

  1. Microsoft – Bill Gates
  2. Apple Macintosh – Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak
  3. Yahoo! – Jerry Yang and David Filo
  4. Google – Larry Page and Sergey Brin
  5. Amazon.com – Jeff  Bezos
  6. Ebay – Pierre Omidyar
  7. Friendster – Jonathan Abrams
  8. MySpace – eUniverse Employees, The project was overseen by Brad Greenspan (eUniverse’s Founder, Chairman, CEO), who managed Chris DeWolfe (MySpace’s starting CEO), Josh Berman, Tom Anderson (MySpace’s starting president), and a team of programmers and resources provided by eUniverse. 9. Multiply – Peter Pezaris
  10. Facebook – Mark Zuckerberg
  11. Youtube – Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, Jawed Karin

I think I’ll stop at 11.  The next question is who bought what and for how much! Hahaha, care to share the information for each?

The thought of selling an online business for millions if not billions of dollars is really amazing.  If that was me, at this very moment I would be relaxing on the beach and drinking an ice cold beer. Yeah!
