Hey there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed or join our Monster Emails for updates. You can also follow me on Twitter.

If you’re a fan of Facebook and you use it all the time to get in touch or create your network, then maybe.. just maybe you missed that itty bitty small horizontal bar that is now showing up on the top of the site – its an invitation to check out the new look and layout of facebook.com.

Above is a quick screenshot of the that baron the top. I’m sure most of you have seen it and tried it and I’m just sharing it here just in case you login to facebook and just do your thing without noticing it. Just click on the Try it now button and your page will refresh with the new interface layout.

New look of Facbook

Visually in terms of colors and panels – its pretty much the same but there are a few key changes that made the new interface layout friendlier and easier to use. I personally think that its better.

Notice the ads are now on the right and is more prominent because it shows up on top. It used to be on the left side at the bottom where you won’t even notice it sometimes – I guess the ads needed a bit of beefing up, I don’t mind.

The new layout:

  • Its wider
  • Tabs make it easier for you to jump to updates
  • You can now add tabs to your favorite applications – easy access (sweet)
  • The dates of the updates are clearer
  • A whole lot more

I think this version is sleeker and a lot of thought went into it. Its a good shift and it just goes to show that the facebook system is powerful and built with progress in mind.

Is this one step closer to handing out the key to more interface control to users? Maybe the next version will allow you to start customizing colors, layouts and more… like friendster.com and multiply.com. But one can always argue that keeping it uniform is better…. hmmm
