Make Money Designing T-Shirts

Hey there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed or join our Monster Emails for updates. You can also follow me on Twitter.

For the past year or so, I’ve been regularly earning a small amount from selling shirts and accessories online. I don’t literally sell them – I just design them. The best part is, I haven’t designed a new one for months and the money still comes in – not as frequent but that’s ok. The money is just enough for a fun new dining experience and a good round of beers – its cool when it comes, its a pleasant surprise and its a sign that its time for a new dining adventure. Ha ha ha.

Here’s how I did it. I created an account with a website a while back – the name of the site is CafePress.com. Its a great concept. In a nutshell, you just need to setup an account/store with them, then submit your designs with the prescribed dimensions and settings, and let them take care of the rest. The best part is that its all free! They have a premium service that you pay for but why do that? All you need is time and a bit of design skills and you are on your way.

Now, there are a few things that you need to remember:

  • CafePress.com only delivers in the U.S.
  • There’s no limit to how many stores you can setup – to take advantage of the free setup account, each design equals a store. Then just track it on the admin interface. The reason for this is because you would want to offer all your designs in all the product types and if you only have one store, you can only assign a design to a specific product
  • You should set your price mark-up. I use percentage on most items but on smaller items like stickers, I prefer adding an exact mark up on the price like a dollar.

Design and Sell Merchandise Online for Free

I’m sort of hosting it on multiply.com – this is another one of those experiments that I’m pursuing. You see, putting up your products in a social networking site like multiply.com guarantees instant exposure for your products – all you have to do is keep adding up some contacts. I talked about it here in my blog in another entry: Online Social Networks
